Cast Acrylic Sheet Manufacturing Process

Cast Acrylic Sheet Manufacturing Process

Acrylic sheet can be separated into two categories as cast acrylic sheet and extruded acrylic sheet according to different manufacturing process.

Cast Acrylic Sheet

Cast acrylic sheet has high molecular weight, excellent stiffness, strength and better resistance to crazing when exposed to solvents. Cast acrylic is characterized by the most labor-intensive method for producing acrylic sheet which is processed with unmatched flexibility in terms of color, texture, finishes and thicknesses that could satisfying most acrylic applications. Cell cast acrylic is generally considered to have the best optical clarity of all the materials. The greater surface hardness and finishes properties of cast acrylic sheets are all superior to those extruded acrylic sheets. Furthermore, cell cast acrylic sheet provides greater machine cleanly and are offered in many custom colors, thickness and special effects.

Extruded Acrylic Sheet

Extruded acrylic is manufactured on automated machinery which is very expensive and it is only suited for producing large volumes of commodity materials with one color and thickness before it will begin manufacturing another product. Compared with cast acrylic sheet, extruded acrylic sheet has low molecular weight and reduced mechanical properties, since it is totally automated mass produced, it does not offer as many color and finishes options. The thickness tolerance of extruded acrylic sheet is smaller than cast acrylic sheet, therefore, the diversity of product thickness are subject to certain restrictions.

Here introduce the detail manufacturing process of cast acrylic sheet which GreenGoods Bath used to produce high quality acrylic bath tubs. The eight steps are as follows:

cast acrylic sheet manufacturing process

1. The mold of cast acrylic sheet is typically made of large tempered glasses.

2. Assemble the mold by two large tempered glass plates which are separated to produce the desired thickness of the sheet and sealed by a gasket at the edge.

3. Construct a mold for each individual sheet, and then pour the acrylic syrup into the mold with a funnel or other device.

4. Carry out water bath technique by submerging the mold into a bath which maintains and controls a curing temperature with cooling as 70℃water for 30 to 40 minutes, and formed under 100℃ water for 15 to 20 minutes.

5. The mold is disassembled and the acrylic sheet is removed from the mold.
